Cox Communications has recently upped their data cap to 1 TB per month and has joined the club with Comcast and AT&T. At the time of introduction of the data caps, the subscribers of only one city had to pay up for extra usage if they hit the limit, but now, the people of more cities would be liable to pay for extra usage and it is expanding.
Cox had recently updated the FAQ page on their website to include Georgia and Florida together with Cleveland in the group of Cox internet users who are now subject to over-usage fees. However, a Cox representative told that there is a grace period for the next two billing cycles, and the two-month grace period before the overage charges kick in will start on Nov 21.
After the two-month grace period runs out (that is on January 2017), subscribers who exceed the data use limit of 1 TB in a month will have to pay an extra fee of ten dollars for every additional 50 GB data used. This will be billed in blocks, meaning that even if you go over the data cap by less than a GB, you will need to pay ten dollars.
As per the Cox representatives, they will send data alerts to their customers when the users are at 85%, 100%, and 125% usage points. They also said that they have already notified users in the affected service areas about the change on October 25.
Meanwhile, many locals complained about the new prices and data caps of Cox to the Gainesville city commissioners’ office in the past weeks via emails. Commissioner Helen Warren said that the topic deserved lengthy and timely discussion and that there are things to change. “The issue comes down to rates is what’s upsetting and the quality of services people are getting,” Warren said.
“We got a lot of emails,” District II Commissioner Todd Chase said. “I didn’t even know where they were coming from. But they came because a sitting elected official fired up a bunch of citizens attacking a local company. That’s fine, but I don’t think we should overreact.”
