Voice Remote – The Latest Innovation From Dish Network

Apple Siri

After a long R&D process, Dish Network has finally released their voice controlled remote. The device is branded ‘Voice Remote’ and is able to control Hopper 3 and 4K Joey set top boxes.

As per the reports, the retail price of Voice Remote is thirty dollars, and the device has two touchpad modes. The default mode of the remote is a blank touchpad. Users can make use of the touchpad for navigation tasks. The second mode is the numeric mode, wherein a keypad will be illuminated; this keypad can be used when you wish to enter a channel number or password.

The introduction of Voice Remote from Dish comes a year after the successful release of a voice controlled remote from Comcast for their X1 platform. As per the reports of Comcast, they have deployed six million voice remotes until now. Although Dish Network started to file Trademark for their voice recognition software in 2013 and released their voice remote at 2015 Consumer Electronics Show, this event was lost in the launch of Sling TV by them.

Dish Otto

Rovi announced in April 2015 that Dish Network will add Rovi Conversation Services natural-language interface to Hopper Voice Remote, on Explorer second-screen app for iPad, and on the Dish Anywhere App. “Voice Remote is simple to use, affordable and, most impressively, operates with incredible speed and accuracy,” said Vivek Khemka, Dish executive VP and CTO. “Leveraging modern navigation paradigms like touch and voice, this remote represents a complete reinvention of the outdated remote control customers have come to expect from cable providers,” he added.

Dish Network has also filed a Trademark application to use the brand Otto for voice recognition. It is rumored that Otto could be the Dish Network’s version of Apple Siri personal assistant. Dish may also use Otto for telecommunication services that are provided by voice recognition.

Voice recognition software is in demand in mobile and pay TV markets, and Dish recognized the increasing popularity of the same. Experts say that the decision of Dish to release Voice Remote is perfect and that voice controlled remotes are the future of satellite TV. Now viewers can access Dish Network channel list with just a voice command.
