Will Twitter’s Live Streaming Mode Be Their Trump Card?

Social Media And TV

Twitter was always popular among celebrities for sharing their thoughts. However, when it comes to common people, it was out of favor. In order to attract new users, Twitter has been making modifications and adding features to their site; their live streaming offering of Wimbledon drew quite a lot attention recently.

It is said that the next big step by Twitter is buying the rights of the most watched sports events in America. Twitter has been in talks with NBA (National Basketball Association), Turner Broadcasting, and MLS (Major Soccer League), for deals allowing them to stream the entire game or the highlights.

Turner Broadcasting has the rights to a number of sporting events like NBA, MLS, and NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament at present, and also owns their own e-sports league, ELeague. If Twitter manages to seal the deal and grab the rights, they would be able to broadcast all these.

Last April, Twitter bought rights for NFL Thursday Night Football, at a huge $10 million, for streaming live games from their first game onwards scheduled in September. And it seems as if the social network company is fixed at providing streaming options for live events in order to lure in sports fans.

TV Viewing Trends

Twitter’s thought of becoming live sports streaming platform would lure in audience is more like a leap of faith. Though there is a possibility that they would attract more viewers by becoming a major live streaming option, but it could only work if they have exclusive rights to the event like DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket.

There is a less likely chance for Twitter to focus more on live sports broadcaster and try to reposition the company from the current micro blogging plus messaging service to a sports and live events hub.

Twitter, with its stock price value and failure to develop business over the past two years, needs to come up with something good in order to survive. This move, however, could be their ticket to triumph or the end of the road, as they have been investing a good share of their investment and time for buying the program rights.
