Users describe this program as \u201cGoogle on steroids\u201d, owing to the numerous private telephone records that it access. Shareholders of AT&amp;T are challenging the operation of the company inside the spy program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a resolution that is being prepared for presentation to AT&amp;T, the shareholders are asking for a public report and board review \u201con the consistency between AT&amp;T\u2019s policies on privacy and civil rights and the company\u2019s actions with respect to U.S. law enforcement investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis proposal addresses programs in use domestically like \u2018Hemisphere,\u2019\u201d said the resolution. \u201cA group of investors in AT&amp;T have had it with the phone company\u2019s collaboration with law enforcement through the Hemisphere program, in which the company facilitates police access to trillions of phone records,\u201d said the Electronic Frontier Foundation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">EFF explained: \u201cPolice refer to Hemisphere as a \u2018Super Search Engine\u2019 and \u2018Google on steroids\u2019 because it provides access to trillions of domestic and international phone call records dating back 30 years. Each day, approximately four billion phone records are added to the system, including calls from non-AT&amp;T customers that pass through the company\u2019s switches and even when a customer changes phone numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHemisphere can also map social relationships and pinpoint locations of callers,\u201d EFF added. The Foundation also said that with the cooperation of AT&amp;T, it actually sells access to the telephone data. This means that the law enforcement officials are able to have access to the details of a phone call without the need to go through a judge. AT&amp;T imposes strict regulations to keep this program secret.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pat Miguel Tomaino, who is the associate director for socially responsible investing at Zevin Asset management said, \u201cWe are shining a light on AT&amp;T\u2019s Hemisphere program, a giant database of customer calls which AT&amp;T runs as a lucrative business line, charging law enforcement agencies upwards of $1 million for bespoke searches and analytics.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1921\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1921\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1921\" class=\"wp-image-1921 size-medium\" title=\"AT&amp;T Phone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Cable-Providers-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Cable Providers\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Cable-Providers-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Cable-Providers-2.jpg 426w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1921\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Zevin Asset Management<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAT&amp;T says that it follows the law and hands over customer data only when police present a legal demand. But why does AT&amp;T retain more call data than peer companies like Verizon and Sprint?
