One of the best internet providers in the U.S, Cox Communications<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> reacted to the ruling by claiming that if this is the case, then pirating customers should never be disconnected from their internet services solely on the basis of copyright holder complaints.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Virginia federal jury had earlier held the telecom company responsible for the copyright infringements of their own subscribers. However, the fastest internet provider declined to disconnect alleged pirates from their internet service. Consequently, Cox Communications<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> was found guilty by the jury for willful contributory copyright infringement. Additionally, the jury also ordered Cox<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> to pay $25 million in damages to music publisher BMG Rights Management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cox<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> had already filed an appeal against this judgment earlier, and recently submitted a new piece of evidence from the Supreme Court arguing that it strongly supports their side of the argument. Cox<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> came up with this new evidence after an important verdict issued by the US Supreme Court, which stated that it is unconstitutional to remove or bar convicted sex offenders from social media. The court also added that the internet is an important tool for people for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/blog\/what-is-cox-tv-flex-watch\/\">exercising their free speech rights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In their filing at the Court of Appeals, Cox<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> said, \u201cPackingham is directly relevant to what constitute \u2018appropriate circumstances\u2019 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/blog\/stay-connected-with-cox-home-phone-packages\/\">terminate Internet access<\/a> to Cox\u2019s customers. The decision emphatically establishes the centrality of Internet access to protected First Amendment activity. As the Court recognized, Internet sources are often \u2018the principal sources for knowing current events, checking ads for employment, speaking and listening in the modern public square, and otherwise exploring the vast realms of human thought and knowledge\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2063\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1863\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2063\" class=\"wp-image-2063 size-medium\" title=\"Terminate Internet Access \" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Cox-TV-1-e1484135178421-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Best Internet\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Cox-TV-1-e1484135178421-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thetripleplay.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Cox-TV-1-e1484135178421.jpg 552w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Willful Contributory Copyright Infringement<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cox Communications<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> went on to cite the ruling from the US Supreme Court and added that the Government \u201cmay not suppress lawful speech as the means to suppress unlawful speech.
