AT&T® Successfully Completes Trials Using 400 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) In Its Network

Fastest Internet Provider

400 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE)

The telecom major AT&T® is carrying out drastic improvements over its network infrastructure. Recently, it has completed the testing of a single-wavelength 400 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) in its production network. This has concluded the last stages of the trial that the Telco has carried out from the previous year onwards. The objective of the trials was to enhance the Ethernet service portfolio and in implementing an open network across the country. AT&T® has carried out the trials in compliance with the IEEE based 400GbE end-to-end standard and intends to virtualize its network.

This end-to-end service was delivered across the AT&T® Open ROADM metro network via utilizing open source controller technology along with Ciena’s optical networking solutions. Field trials that were carried out before requires the use of multiple wavelengths for creating the 400GbE network connection. This new trial using the 400 Gigabit Ethernet also considered the latest open optical network advances using reconfigurable add-drop multiplexes (ROADMs) and SDN-based controllers. AT&T® and other internet providers such as Verizon® have witnessed the benefits of using the Colorless, Directionless and Contentionless (CDC) ROADMs.

During the trials, AT&T® has also utilized open-sourced white boxes as network equipment. This has enabled AT&T® to regulate the costs involved as well as provide interoperability amongst the hardware of the network. According to AT&T®, these trials can result in the upgrading of the connectivity backbones of its networks to provide 400GbE. This will also enable the Telco to become the fastest internet provider that gives business customers access to the ultra-fast internet.

Open Source Controller Technology

“Introducing 400GbE is a natural next step. Customer demands have shifted to faster speeds, more video-centric content and cloud integration,” Roman Pacewicz, chief product officer for AT&T® Business said. Businesses can benefit a lot by using these new 400GbE services particularly those offering mobility services, online streaming, and search engines. The 400GbE services will provide them the means to transfer huge amounts of data effortlessly and with less time.

In addition, AT&T® also carried out a successful trial of the 400GbE connection in live traffic on its network operating between Washington DC and New York. An SDN controller was employed for this test to make a direct path into the two cities. AT&T® started the trials previous year on the 400GbE network in three phases. To assist in the trials, AT&T® also relied on the optical gear offered by Coriant to carry the 400GbE service across the two cities.

AT&T® Offering Free HBO® To Customers In Its Unlimited Wireless Plans

Best Internet Service

Unlimited Wireless Plans

AT&T® is up to some major revamps in their existing wireless plans. The Telco has announced the addition of free HBO® to its customers using unlimited plans. This is now extended to both the Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Choice wireless plans offered by the company. Previously, AT&T® had limited this option of free HBO® only to the customers under the Unlimited Plus plan. Yet according to AT&T®, the option of free HBO® will now be available to new and existing customers of its Unlimited Choice plan as well from September 15 onward.

The pricing of both the unlimited plans will remain unaltered with the addition of free HBO®. Moreover, it reflects a new move by AT&T® in making it the best internet service in the country by attracting more customers that are using the services of other providers. The Unlimited Choice plan is currently offered at a rate of $60 per month for unlimited data, voice, and text. Besides that, AT&T® is also offering a monthly video credit worth $25 to the customers using the Unlimited Choice plan. This can be used alongside the streaming service offered by the Telco, DirecTV Now®.

For Unlimited Plus customers, this monthly video credit can also be used with both DirecTV® and U-Verse® TV. This addition of $25 video credit also enables the customers to add over the top streaming TV service for $10 per month. This will be helpful for customers, as the plans for DirecTV Now® starts at a rate of $35 per month.

Internet Providers

Top Streaming TV Service

According to AT&T®, customers having an existing video service of the company will be provided with HBO® at no additional charges. They also stated that there is no need for payment on existing HBO® subscribers. Additionally, customers who are not subscribed to HBO® through a video service of AT&T® will be able to access HBO® using DirecTV Now® and with the HBO GO® applications.

AT&T® has made this free HBO® offer to its customers as a measure to step up the competition with other internet providers such as T-Mobile®. Recently, T-Mobile® announced that they would provide free Netflix® in their unlimited data family plans. It is clear that with these offers, both the companies are trying to attract the maximum number of customers into their unlimited plans.

Currently, AT&T® is in the process of acquiring Time Warner®, the parent company of HBO®. The deal is currently pending approval from the U.S. Department of Justice and the company expects to obtain the necessary clearances by the end of the year.

Customers Experiences Outage

The strike involving approximately 2000 employees of Charter Communications® in New Jersey and New York has entered into the sixth month. The strike between Charter Communications® and their workers began by the end of March and it involves approximately 1,800 members from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 3. Charter® customers has been experience outage issues over the last few months due to vandalism and cut cables since the beginning of the strike.

The latest outage of the kind happened a few days ago in Brooklyn and Queens. However, customers are hopeful that Charter Communications®, who is one of the best internet providers in the United States, will fix the issues as soon as possible.

In a recent announcement, the officials from the telecom company confirmed that they are working hard to bring service back to customers after the recent accident. Charter® said, “Our repair crews have been working tirelessly throughout the night to restore service as quickly as possible, and we expect gradual restoration during the day. We appreciate our customers’ patience as we do. We are also working with the NYPD on an investigation of this latest round of criminal destruction of our network.”

Vandalism And Cut Cables

The officials from Charter® also added that they are viewing the latest incident not as a mere accident but as an intentional act of vandalism. The telecom company has not yet connected these outages with the employees’ strike. However, Charter® did comment that they have identified over 100 network vandalism acts ever since the walkout of employees. There were only four such outages in the last three years prior to the beginning of the strike.

On the other hand, the representatives of IBEW Local 3 have not yet commented on the issue but reports suggest that they will soon shed light on the same issue. However, the union has already claimed that none of their members were involved in such an act of vandalism. In addition to that, they also condemned such actions.

Reports claim that both the parties are still having negotiations to solve the issue but it might take a bit longer. Despite all the outages and other issues, your best bet at acquiring a cheap internet deal is still Charter Communications®.

Cox® To Charge Extra $50 Per Month For Unlimited Data

Cheap Internet

Extra Charge For Unlimited Data

Most of the internet customers in the country love to watch HD video contents and stream live sports events, TV shows, and movies on their tablets, smartphones, and other devices. This recent increase in the internet consumption has urged several customers to look for an unlimited data plan. However, the issue is that some of the leading internet providers in the country are still a little bit hesitant to offer an unlimited data plan.

For instance, the third largest internet provider in the country, Cox Communications® has started to charge an additional amount of $50 a month from customers who are looking to get rid of their data cap to avoid high internet fees.

Fortunately, the telecom company, Cox® has not yet imposed data caps in all their markets but they have been trying to expand its reach over the last few months. Cox® subscribers in New Orleans had earlier received a note from the company, in which Cox® notified them that will have to pay an additional fee of $10 if they exceed their monthly data cap. The officials from the telecom company added that these data caps would only affect approximately 2 percent of their customers.

Internet Providers

Avoid High Internet Fees

A memo from Cox® that documented the changes stated, “An overwhelming majority of data is consumed by a very small percentage of internet users. The new choices are great options for the small percentage of heavy users who routinely use 1TB+ per month and prefer a flat monthly rate, rather than purchasing additional data blocks.”

However, Cox® is offering another option to customers that allot 500 GB of additional data to customers who are under the 1.5 TB of data per month plan. This add-on package can be purchased for just $30 but it is significant to note that the Cox® has confirmed that the “unused data does not roll over.”

The internet service offered by Cox® is currently available to 6 million customers across 18 states of the country. The telecom giant imposes data caps in some of their markets such as Virginia, Rhode Island, Oklahoma, Ohio, Nebraska, Nevada, Louisiana, Kansas, Iowa, Idaho, Georgia, Florida, Connecticut, California, Arkansas, and Arizona. Many experts shared their concerns on Cox’s latest move to follow the footsteps of Comcast Corporation® who also has an unlimited data option for an extra amount of $50 a month.

CenturyLink® And Orange Beach Plan To Rollout Fiber Optics Broadband

Fastest Internet Provider

Fiber Optics Broadband

Alabama’s Orange Beach city is planning to bring fiber optic to the native residents with American fastest internet provider, CenturyLink®. In a recent meeting, the city council put forth a proposal to CenturyLink® officials regarding an “economic development investment” of $1 million towards the fiber optic project in Orange Beach.

“We have been searching for about two years to find someone who would bring fiber to the residences, to the neighborhoods,” said the Orange Beach Councilman, Jerry Johnson, in a recent statement. However, the city council expects CenturyLink® to sign up at least thousand residents to the fiber optic project in Orange Beach with $25 each.

For the project to unfold successfully, Johnson says, additional 33 percent of residents should also sign up into the fiber optic project in Orange Beach. Johnson, a Bessemer native, got elected into the city council in 2012, and has been a resident of Orange Beach for the 12 past years. Johnson is also the chairman of the city’s Telecommunications and Technology Committee.

Reports say that CenturyLink® has divided Orange Beach into seven zones and has around 6000 full-time residents to raise the funds. Johnson further clarified that the $25 each will go into “a mutually agreed escrow account” and not a CenturyLink® exclusive account.

“If for some reason after 12 months we have not reached those thresholds, the city hasn’t put up anything, CenturyLink Johnson says hasn’t put in anything and everybody who put up a deposit will get a full refund,” the councilman reaffirmed to the residents.

Best Internet

Economic Development Investment

In a bid to raise the funds and get feedbacks on the fiber optic project, CenturyLink® will hold at least four customer forums at the Orange Beach Community Center during September this year. Following months of prolonged talks with the fastest internet provider, the city council has decided to consider the “economic development investment.”

“It took us about 18 months to get the board of CenturyLink to agree to do a project and for Orange Beach to say we were willing to do it,” Johnson said. “CenturyLink sees a market with small cities. They think there are thousands of small cities that want broadband and they are willing to set up a market specifically for small cities.”

The proposal will be sanctioned by CenturyLink® subject to the conditions as explained. The customer forum of CenturyLink® will give you more details on best internet and the plans on the cards in Orange Beach.

CenturyLink® Makes Use Of Artificial Intelligence To Boost Sales

Cable TV Providers

Artificial Intelligence To Boost Sales

CenturyLink® is now making use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the effectiveness of their human sales force. It is reported that they will make use of AI to automate the work of the qualifying sales leads. CenturyLink® is now working with a company named Conversica Inc. and their Artificial Intelligence agent named Angie that can quickly work through the tens and thousands of leads generated each month via varied sources to concentrate on the ones that can effectively transform into sales to generate revenue for the company.

The Software-as-a-Service Artificial Intelligence offering from Conversica has been much successful on every single dollar that CenturyLink® spends on the service. It is reported that the service generates twenty dollars in revenue for every dollar spend on it by CenturyLink®. This sales automation by Artificial Intelligence is much effective in helping CenturyLink® to economically reach the smaller businesses, where the volumes of revenue cannot justify making use of much human capital, says Gary Gerber, who is a senior director at Conversica.

“CenturyLink® gets about 90,000 leads a quarter and there is no way they can engage every one of those people in a conversation, so they cherry-pick — they have humans get in touch with the best prospects and have the conversations,” Gerber says. “But you know there are hundreds of sales leads that go untapped.”

These leads come in from different promotions through the internet, telemarketing programs, and more. Conversica helps CenturyLink® via their AI agents to enable email responses and texts that feel like normal human conversation to the leads. The best part of this automation is that every lead will get a response that is specifically tailored for the consumer.

Software-As-A-Service AI

The Artificial Intelligence agent Angie is capable of reading response and continues the conversation to the point where it is time to transfer the particular lead off to a salesperson. Angie is even capable of making an appointment.

The Conversica system is integrated into Marketo, which is an automated marketing system of CenturyLink® and as the leads come in, Angie goes to work sending texts or emails to engage with the leads. Gerber said that Angie is persistent. “She’ll try as many times as it takes,” he says.

Angie also gets smarter. Gerber says, “What we call AI is actually a bunch of AIs and some real intelligence too. There is an AI that can interpret what is the best message to send, another focused on how to generate the best response, an AI that actually reads it [and interprets it], another AI that measures intent, and another that says what is the right way to respond.”
