Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was launched with a promise of telling stories on the margins of Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is true that many connections and references have been made so far, but this has also divided the fans over the differences.
The current situation is that the TV series is only able to make passing references to the events in the recent Marvel movies. At the same time, MCU movies barely say that there is a TV cousin for it.
How Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Connects With Doctor Strange
The supernaturally tinged fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered this week, just 45 days before the theatrical release of Doctor Strange. And the show runners are teasing connections between the series and the movie already.
Both film and TV sides of Marvel Cinematic Universe have featured supernatural plots, so both had explanations based on Arthur C. Clarke’s Third Law (“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”). This means that Thor, Loki, and the other Asgardians are inter dimensional aliens and not magicians or Gods.
However, the case is different now. Doctor Strange has introduced “real” magic and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s reveal-packed premiere of the fourth season shows Agent May being haunted by a ghost. Also, Daisy Johnson encounters Ghost Rider, a Marvel superhero who claims to get his powers from Mephisto (Marvel’s version of Devil).
Though show-runners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen downplayed the idea of direct connections between the film and the series, they confirmed that both will be covering some same grounds. “The same questions that our team is exploring leading up to the premiere of Doctor Strange, perhaps some of those concepts will be reflected in the movie and then carried through,” Tancharoen said.
Ghost Rider
Whendon also explained that, “The tie this year will feel more of a reflection of the movie, less an interweaving plot. As that movie hits the world, it comes at the right time in our show, and you will see some of those same ideas being explored. Hopefully some of the questions that we’re asking will be answered by it and then pose some new themes and ideas for us to explore.”
